A Net Present Value Model of Natural Gas Exploitation in Northern Alberta: An Analysis of Land Values in Woodland Caribou Ranges AgEcon
Hauer, Grant; Adamowicz, Wiktor L.; Jagodzinski, Robert.
This report was prepared for the purpose of providing background documentation of inputs to be used in mathematical programming models and papers, which are being prepared for our research project: Ecological and economic tradeoff analysis of conservation strategies for woodland caribou. The report presents a simple net present value model of resource and land value for natural gas in northern Alberta. The variables in the model include costs (drilling, seismic, operating and capital); geological variables (stratigraphic intervals, booked reserves, future reserves); drilling variables (well densities, drilling success rates, and drilling depths); production data and prices. Each variable is described in detail and methods of derivation are provided. A map...

A SEQUENTIAL CHOICE MODEL OF RECREATION BEHAVIOR AgEcon
Adamowicz, Wiktor L.; Jennings, Sarah; Coyne, Alison.
The travel cost model is the standard model used in the recreation demand literature. This model assumes that the decision on the number of trips to a particular site in a given period (a season, for example) is determined at the beginning of the period. For certain types of recreation activity, this decision may be more appropriately modeled as a sequential process, in which the decision of whether or not to take each additional trip is made after previous trips have occurred. This decision is dependent on the realization of random variables on previous trips as well as travel costs. A model is developed in which the choice of a discrete number of sequentially chosen trips to a given site is specified as function of site-specific variables and variables...

AN ECONOMETRIC ANALYSIS OF DONATIONS FOR ENVIRONMENTAL CONSERVATION IN CANADA AgEcon
Yen, Steven T.; Boxall, Peter C.; Adamowicz, Wiktor L..
As provincial governments in Canada trim budgets, fewer funds are available for environmental conservation programs. Many jurisdictions are letting private interests and/or users of the resource base help fund conservation projects. Thus funding for conservation is becoming more dependent on donations to environmental causes either through direct giving of funds or through memberships in organizations. This study explores some determinants of private contributions to environmental conservation activities through an econometric analysis of donations and memberships relating to wildlife habitat protection and enhancement. We use data from a 1991 survey conducted in the three prairie provinces that provides information on donation behavior, income,...

An Economic Evaluation of Woodland Caribou Conservation Programs in Northwestern Saskatchewan AgEcon
Tanguay, Mark; Adamowicz, Wiktor L.; Boxall, Peter C..
The purpose of this study was to identify the values Saskatchewan residents place on their Woodland Caribou conservation programs. Using contingent valuation methods, individual values for maintaining caribou numbers within Millar Western-NorSask Forest Management Licence agreement area were estimated. Using these value estimates, societal benefits were estimated for the implementation of a woodland caribou maintenance program within the forest licence agreement area. The data used in this study were collected using a mailout survey to Saskatchewan residents. Two contingent valuation formats were used, the opened ended willingness to pay and the dichotomous choice. A number of question structures were employed in order to judge the sensitivity of the...

An Experimental Investigation of the Impact of Fat Taxes: Prices Effects, Food Stigma, and Information Effects on Economics Instruments to Improve Dietary Health AgEcon
Cash, Sean B.; Lacanilao, Ryan D.; Adamowicz, Wiktor L.; Raine, Kim.
There is currently no published research on how food taxes may affect consumer behaviour when the imposition of the tax itself may be considered a source of consumer information. The work undertaken here seeks to address this gap in the literature by using experimental methods to enhance understanding on the joint effects of price changes induced by a fat tax and the stigma associated with the application of the tax. First, we conduct an interdisciplinary literature review (drawing from economics, psychology, and health promotion) and theoretical investigation of the impact of stigma on economic choice behaviours. We then employ Attribute-Based Stated Choice Methods (ABSCM) to elicit consumer response to fat tax scenarios that rely only on price changes,...

ANALYSIS OF "DON'T KNOW" RESPONSE TO REFERENDUM CONTINGENT VALUATION QUESTIONS AgEcon
Haener, Michel K.; Adamowicz, Wiktor L..
This paper considers the treatment of "don't know" (DK) responses to referendum contingent valuation questions. The determinants of DK responses are empirically analyzed using a data set from a survey of old growth forest valuation. It is found that DK respondents possess unique characteristics that differentiate them from Yes and No respondents. These findings do not support the most common treatments of DK responses that are currently used. Responses to an open-ended question included in the survey are used to provide further insight into the preferences of DK respondents.

Are Country of Origin and Non-GM Premiums Invariant to Experimental Auction Structure? AgEcon
Volinskiy, Dmitriy; Adamowicz, Wiktor L.; Veeman, Michele M.; Srivastava, Lorie.
A revealed preference auction experiment is used to elicit values for two attributes, one relating to genetic modification and the other to country of origin of the food product, canola oil. A premium for a non-GM canola oil is found to approximate CA$0.4 to $0.6 per litre. Auction format effects are found and hypotheses as to why these may occur are suggested.

ASSESSING IMPACTS OF ENVIRONMENTAL CHANGE ON ABORIGINAL PEOPLE: AN ECONOMIC EXAMINATION OF SUBSISTENCE RESOURCE USE AND VALUE AgEcon
Dosman, Donna; Haener, Michel K.; Adamowicz, Wiktor L.; Marois, Juanita; Boxall, Peter C..
The report describes the research design, data collection and preliminary analysis of an economic assessment of non-timber resource use by Aboriginal People in Northwest Saskatchewan. The project is designed to develop methods of valuing resource use by Aboriginal People so that these values can be incorporated into forest resource management decisions and to evaluate the impact of forest management actions on the economic well-being of Aboriginal People living in the region. Data on non-timber resource use are collected and spatially explicit economic models are developed in order to construct estimates of behavioral change and value associated with changes in the environment and landscape (through forestry, access, or other landscape changes).

Bayesian Analysis of Consumer Choices with Taste, Context, Reference Point and Individual Scale Effects AgEcon
Hu, Wuyang; Adamowicz, Wiktor L.; Veeman, Michele M..
This paper adopts an approach based on the concepts of random utility maximization and builds on the general theoretical framework of Lancaster and on the conceptual and econometric innovations of McFadden. Recent research in this area explores models that account for context effects, as well as methods for characterizing heterogeneity, response variability and decision strategy selection by consumers. This makes it possible to construct much richer empirical models of individual consumer behavior. A Bayesian approach provides a useful way to estimate and interpret models that are difficult to accomplish by conventional maximization/minimization algorithms. The application reported in the paper involves analysis of reference dependence and product...

BIODIVERSITY AND NATURE-BASED TOURISM: THE POTENTIAL FOR SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT IN UGANDA AgEcon
Naidoo, Robin; Adamowicz, Wiktor L..
The benefits of nature-based tourism to biodiversity conservation are often presumed but rarely quantified. The relative value placed on attributes of nature parks is unknown, as is the contribution of biodiversity to tourists' willingness to visit a particular protected area. We surveyed tourists and foreign residents in Uganda to determine how preferences for particular protected areas are formed. We evaluated tourists' demand for elevated biodiversity levels (increased numbers of bird species seen), relative to other protected areas attributes. As the number of bird species increased, tourists demonstrated increased willingness to visit a protected area, independently of all other factors. We used these results to evaluate a revenue-maximising park...

BSE and the Dynamics of Beef Consumption: Influences of Habit and Trust AgEcon
Ding, Yulian; Veeman, Michele M.; Adamowicz, Wiktor L..
This study relates habit persistence and trust to recurring food safety incidents in the context of a series of three BSE incidents in Canada. We examined the dynamics of monthly beef expenditure shares of a sample of Canadian households for monthly time periods during year 2002 through 2005 using micro level panel data which followed meat expenditures by Canadian households before and after the first three BSE cases which were discovered in 2003 and 2005. Our results suggest that households’ reactions to the first three BSE events followed a similar general pattern: households reduced beef purchase expenditures following the discovery of BSE but these expenditures subsequently recovered, suggesting that concern diminished over time. Following the first...

CHOICE AND TEMPORAL WELFARE IMPACTS: DYNAMIC GEV DISCRETE CHOICE MODELS AgEcon
Swait, Joffre; Adamowicz, Wiktor L.; van Bueren, Martin.
Welfare economics is often employed to measure the impact of economic policies or externalities. When demand is characterized by discrete choices, static models of consumer demand are employed for this type of analysis because of the difficulty in estimating dynamic discrete choice models. In this paper we provide a tractable approach to estimating dynamic discrete choice models of the Generalized Extreme Value (GEV) family that addresses many of the problems identified in the literature and provides a rich set of parameters describing dynamic choice. We apply this model to the case of recreational fishing site choice, comparing dynamic to static versions. In natural resource damage assessment cases, static discrete choice models of recreational site...

Choice Environment, Market Complexity and Consumer Behavior: A Theoretical and Empirical Approach for Incorporating Decision Complexity into Models of Consumer Choice AgEcon
Swait, Joffre; Adamowicz, Wiktor L..
Most empirical models of consumer choice assume that the decision-maker assesses all alternatives and information in a perfect information processing sense. The complexity of the choice environment, the ability of the individual to make complex decisions and the effect of choice context on the decision strategy, are generally not considered in statistical model development. One of the reasons for this omission is that theoretical literature on choice complexity and imperfect ability to choose has not been translated into empirical methods that permit such considerations in econometric analysis. In this paper we outline a theoretical model that considers task complexity, effort applied by the consumer, ability to choose, and choice. We then construct a...

Choice Task Complexity and Decision Strategy Selection AgEcon
Swait, Joffre; Adamowicz, Wiktor L..
The psychology, the marketing consumer behavior and, to a much smaller extent, the economics literature have long reported evidence that decision makers utilize different decision strategies depending upon many factors (person-specific, task-specific, etc.). Such observations have generally failed to affect the specification of choice models in commercial practice and academic research, both of which still tend to assume an utility maximizing, full information, indefatigable decision maker. This is true whether the models deal with Stated Preference (SP - from hypothetical elicitations) or Revealed Preference (RP - from actual market decisions) choice data. This paper, which deals only with SP data, addresses the following issues: (1) does task complexity...

COMBINING STATED AND REVEALED PREFERENCE DATA TO CONSTRUCT AN EMPIRICAL EXAMINATION OF INTRAHOUSEHOLD BARGAINING AgEcon
Dosman, Donna; Adamowicz, Wiktor L..
The behavior of households has traditionally been explained by assuming that a single decision maker maximizes utility over all members of the household subject to a budget constraint. This unitary model of household behavior has been questioned and compared to models that assume that household decisions are made in a bargaining process. We examine household behavior in a bargaining framework by combining stated preference information from individual members of the household with revealed preference information on the household's actual choices. The context of the decision is determining the location of family recreation vacation choice. The resulting model, based on a bargaining framework, provides information on the factors affecting bargaining power as...

Conserving Water in Irrigated Agriculture: The Economics and Valuation of Water Rights AgEcon
Veeman, Terrence S.; Veeman, Michele M.; Adamowicz, Wiktor L.; Royer, S.; Viney, Bruce; Freeman, Ruth; Baggs, J..
The effective management of water resources in Alberta is crucial to sustainable agriculture, industrial development, and environmental management. The historical water allocation mechanism, administrative apportionment, has been viewed in recent years as ineffective and cumbersome. Accordingly, the revision of the Water Act in 1996, included an attempt to improve the efficiency of water allocation. By making the transfer of water rights possible, the revised Act provides many new options for water use and flexibility. The implications of transferable water rights in Alberta water policy must be carefully considered in order to determine the viability and suitability of such a system in the provincial context. This project examines some of the economic...

CONSUMER'S PERCEPTIONS OF ENVIRONMENTAL RISKS AND THE DEMAND FOR FOOD SAFETY AgEcon
Veeman, Michele M.; Adamowicz, Wiktor L..
Public concern regarding food safety has emerged as a major policy issue. Chemicals and biotechnological processes are perceived as risks of food safety despite their contribution to an efficient, low cost agriculture and food industry. Increases in uses of biotechnological processes for foods are expected to be a major potential source of productivity improvements for Alberta and Canadian agriculture in future years. However, the demand for food safety involves increasing awareness and concern by consumers of chemical inputs and biotechnological processes in the agriculture and food industries. Nonetheless, there is a lack of basic economic and agricultural economic theory and methodology to analyze these issues and a need for policy, socioeconomics and...
